doxoINSIGHTS’ U.S. Utilities Market Size and Household Spend Report for 2024 reveals that Americans spend an average of $362 per month on utilities, up 3% from last year. The findings uncover that 79% of U.S. households with a utility bill spend $362 per month, or $4,344 per year – which equates to $3,432* per year when averaging across all U.S. households. Through a statistical analysis of actual household payments toward utilities across 97% of U.S. zip codes, the report also reveals that Americans spend a total of $451 billion annually on utility bills.

Utilities costs have risen over the past year, and will continue to rise throughout the winter months 

These doxoINSIGHTS findings come as electricity prices have mostly kept pace with inflation over the past decade but surpassed inflation rates in 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, retail prices of electricity will continue to increase across all customer segments in 2025. In line with this forecast, doxo’s data reveals that payments to Utility bills as a whole were up 3% year over year, suggesting that Americans could continue to be in for an expensive winter in terms of paying bills.
