This figure takes into account the 10 most common household bills, which are:Mortgage; Rent; Auto Loan; Utilities (electric, gas, water & sewer, and waste & recycling); Auto Insurance; Cable & Internet & Phone, Health Insurance (consumer paid portion); Mobile Phone; Alarm & Security; and Life Insurance.
Maine residents pay roughly average household bill expenses: the state ranks 24th out of 50 states in terms of monthly spending.This is 4% less than the national average of $2,003.
Slightly more expensive than Maine is Arizona, where residents pay $1,936 a month on average; slightly more affordable is Wisconsin, where residents pay $1,915.
The most expensive state for household expenses is Hawaii, where residents pay $2,911 per month. The most affordable state, meanwhile, is West Virginia, where bills average $1,452 per month.

Rent in Maine is 23% lower than the national average
The average Maine household pays $1,922 in the 10 most common household bills per month. Housing costs deviate substantially from the national average. The average mortgage is $1,192 per month in Maine compared to the national average of $1,368: 13% lower than the national average. The gulf between the state and national average is even more dramatic for Rent. Mainers pay their landlords at $866 a month, compared to $1,129 nationally: a difference of 23%.
Utilities, however, is a category where Maine residents pay substantially more than the national average. The average Maine household spends $452 on their utility bill, compared to the national average of $328. This is a difference of 38%.

Residents of Scarborough pay the highest household bills in the state of Maine, at an average of $2,547 per month. South Portland comes in second in the rankings, with residents paying an average of $2,316 on household expenses.
Residents of Scarborough, spend substantially less of their income on bills than South Portland residents do. While Scarborough residents spend 31% of their income on bills–9% less than the state average–South Portland residents spend 42% of their income on bills.
